Oldcastle Windows & Doors: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Oldcastle-compatible window and door components throughout Dallas, with most hardware swaps running $180–$750 installed and full window replacements typically landing between $4500 and $15000 depending on how many openings and what needs to come out. Most owners find us after a sash stops staying up, a lock will not throw, or a door starts dragging across the threshold. The short version: if your Oldcastle window or door is still square and the glass is intact, we can almost always get the right part in and matched faster than replacing the whole unit. If the frame has rot or the glass has lost its seal, we will tell you that honestly and price the replacement instead of patching a part that will fail again in eighteen months.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle built and licensed windows under a few different labels before the brand consolidated, so the first thing we do on any Dallas service call is read the sticker. Look in the top or side channel of the sash for a white or silver label with a manufacturing code starting with “OLDC” or “OC” followed by a date string. That code tells us which series you have: the 3000 and 5000 series aluminum windows are the ones we see most across older Dallas neighborhoods like Casa View and Lake Highlands, while the vinyl 7000 series shows up in homes built after the early 2000s. The hard part with Oldcastle is that two windows that look identical from the outside can take different balance assemblies depending on whether they were built in the Texas plant or shipped from the Oklahoma facility. We match off the actual code, not off a photo, because we have seen too many homeowners order a sash lock or pivot bar online and find the screw posts are 1/8 inch off. For glass and sealed units, OEM Oldcastle glass is fine but expensive; in most cases we recommend a Dallas glass supplier we work with regularly whose insulated units meet the same Energy Star specs for half the lead time. The difference is a stamp on the spacer bar, and we will show it to you before we install it.

Signs Your Oldcastle Windows & Doors Is Failing

  • You have to lift or hold the sash to keep it open. The coil balances or tube balances have worn out. This is the most common Oldcastle failure we see in Dallas, because the constant heat cycling makes the spring steel inside the balance lose tension years before the frame shows any wear. It is not dangerous, but it gets worse fast once it starts.
  • The sash drops when you unlock it. This usually means a pivot bar snapped or the balance shoe cracked. When we pull the sash, we often find the shoe is still the original nylon part, and nylon parts in a Dallas attic-facing window frame get brittle. The fix is a full balance and shoe replacement on both sides, not just the side that broke.
  • The lock will not throw or the crank turns without moving anything. Oldcastle casement windows use a worm-gear operator, and the gear teeth strip when the sash gets even slightly misaligned. Forcing the crank just makes the replacement more involved, because a stripped operator can bend the tie bar behind it.
  • You feel air moving around the closed window or door. Weatherstripping on Oldcastle units was a vinyl bulb gasket, and after eight to ten Texas summers it is flat and hard. We replace the gasket and check the sweep on the door bottom at the same time, because air sealing is always a pair of problems, not one.
  • Window or panel is hard to slide, or door drags on one side. This is almost never the rollers alone. Oldcastle sliding units sit on adjustable steel rollers that corrode in humidity, but the bigger issue in Dallas clay soil is that the opening has shifted slightly and the frame is now out of square. We reset the rollers, adjust the frame where possible, and tell you honestly if the opening itself has moved beyond what adjustment can fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Dallas homeowners, Oldcastle-specific parts and labor land in predictable ranges. A sash lock, keeper, or pivot bar swap runs $180–$320 installed. Coil balance replacement on both sides of a double-hung window runs $320–$550, including the balance shoes. A full insulated glass unit for a 7000 series vinyl window runs $650–$1100 per sash, and a full window replacement under our broader window service runs $4500–$15000 for a typical Dallas home with eight to twelve openings. What moves the number is the series, the size of the glass, whether we are replacing one part or the whole set, and whether the frame needs prep work before the new part will sit right. Every quote is written before work starts, with the part, the labor, and the warranty broken out in line items, because that is the only way we have ever done it and the only way Isaac Pruett will do it now.

DIY or Call Us?

You can replace a sash lock, a weatherstrip, or a screen clip on your own if you are comfortable with a screwdriver. Those are low-stakes parts and we will even tell you the part number to order. What you should not do is try to replace a coil balance, a pivot bar on a loaded sash, or anything under spring tension. The coil springs in Oldcastle balances are under constant load, and if you release the anti-drop clip incorrectly, that sash is dropping out of the frame with enough force to break fingers. We have repaired windows where a homeowner tried this and ended up with a bent frame and a bigger bill than the original problem would have cost. If the part is under tension or the sash has to come out, call (432) 302-8761 and let us do it right the first time.
