Quikrete Fence Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

A full Quikrete fence installation in Dallas typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed, depending on linear footage, post depth, and whether we’re setting posts in expansive clay soil or rocky conditions. We stock Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix and Quikrete 5000 on our trucks for fence work, and most residential installations are completed in two to four working days once materials are on site. The usual call we get starts with a leaning post or a gate that drags, and by the time we dig down, the old concrete footing has cracked or the post has rotted at the soil line.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

This page covers the two Quikrete products that matter for fence work in Dallas: Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix (the red bag, sets in about 20 to 40 minutes, no mixing required, just pour it dry into the hole and add water) and Quikrete 5000 (a 5,000 psi mix that holds up better against the freeze-thaw cycles we get in North Texas winters). If you’re setting posts for a wood privacy fence, a vinyl fence, or a chain-link fence with terminal posts, these are the two mixes we reach for. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Fast-Setting mix is not the right choice for posts carrying serious lateral load, like a gate post or a corner post on a 6-foot privacy fence. Those need Quikrete 5000 or a standard 4,000 psi mix with rebar, because the fast-set formula doesn’t develop the same long-term tensile strength. Check the bag: Fast-Setting says “sets in 20-40 minutes” across the front, while 5000 shows the strength rating prominently. As for OEM versus aftermarket, there is no real aftermarket equivalent to concrete mix. You’re buying the chemistry, and Quikrete’s blend is consistent bag to bag, which is why we don’t substitute store-brand mixes on fence projects, especially in Dallas where clay soil shifts with moisture and a weak footing telegraphs straight up the post.

Signs Your Quikrete Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Post leaning more than 10 degrees off plumb. This usually means the concrete footing cracked below grade, either from a too-shallow hole or from expansive clay pressing against it during wet-dry cycles. In Dallas, we see this most often in East Dallas and Garland, where Blackland Prairie clay holds water and moves.
  • Gate that drags or won’t latch. The gate post is shifting, which means the footing was undersized for the load. A 6-foot gate needs a post hole at least 30 inches deep and 10 to 12 inches wide, with a Quikrete 5000 footing, not fast-set.
  • Visible crack lines radiating through the concrete collar at ground level. The footing is failing from the outside in. Once you can see the crack, water has already been getting in and making it worse every winter.
  • Post wobbles when you push on it, even slightly. Some movement is the post flexing, but if the concrete collar moves with the post, the bond between concrete and post has failed, likely due to rot where wood meets soil or insufficient embedment depth.
  • Concrete footing has heaved up above the grass line. That’s expansion pushing the whole assembly upward. In Dallas’s freeze-thaw cycle, water gets under the footing, freezes, and lifts. A footing poured too shallow will rise like a cork.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

For a Dallas fence replacement or new install using Quikrete products, expect $3,500 to $9,000 all-in. Here’s how that breaks down:

Scope of Work Typical Dallas Price Range
Single post re-set (dig out old concrete, new Quikrete 5000 footing) $250 – $500 per post
Short run replacement (up to 50 linear feet, posts and panels) $3,500 – $5,500
Full backyard fence install (150 – 200 linear feet, wood or vinyl) $6,000 – $9,000
Gate post reinforcement with deeper footing and rebar $400 – $800 per gate

What drives the range is post depth. Dallas code requires fence posts set a minimum of 24 inches deep, but we go 30 to 36 inches on anything taller than 4 feet or any post carrying a gate. Deeper holes mean more concrete, more time, and a footing that actually survives our clay. Every quote includes the concrete, post hardware, fasteners, haul-away of old materials, and a written price before we ever start. No change orders, no “the soil was worse than we thought” surcharges. Our workmanship warranty on fence installation is 365 days from the completion date, stated plainly on the written guarantee every project gets.

DIY or Call Us?

Honestly, a single fence post re-set is something a determined homeowner can do with a post-hole digger, a level, a bag of Quikrete Fast-Setting, and a free Saturday. The part that goes wrong is rarely the pour. It’s the digging: Dallas clay fights back, and a 30-inch hole by hand in August is a character-building experience. What you can safely check yourself: is the post rotted at the base, is the old concrete cracked through, and is the hole wide enough (at least three times the post width). What we’d rather you not do: re-set a gate post that carries a heavy wooden gate, or any post on a fence shared with a neighbor. Get the hole depth wrong on a gate and you’re re-doing it in a year. If you’d rather hand it off, call (432) 302-8761 and we’ll dig, pour, set, and haul the old concrete away.
