James Hardie Driveway & Pavers: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
James Hardie does not manufacture driveways or pavers. HardiePlank, HardiePanel, and HardieTrim are fiber-cement siding and trim products, not hardscaping materials. If someone quoted you “James Hardie pavers,” what they likely meant is a driveway or paver system designed to complement James Hardie siding, using compatible base materials and edge details around the home’s exterior.
In Dallas, a paver driveway installation runs $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base depth, and paver type. We install paver driveways and patios that sit correctly against Hardie siding and trim, with proper drainage so water never wicks into the fiber cement. Here’s what to know before you spend a dollar.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

Every James Hardie exterior product, from HardiePlank lap siding in 4×8, 5.25×10, and 6.25×10 profiles to HardiePanel vertical sheets and HardieTrim boards, has one thing in common where driveways meet the house: the bottom edge should sit a minimum of 6 inches above finished grade or paving. That clearance is non-negotiable for the Hardie warranty, and it is the detail most driveway contractors in Dallas get wrong.
If you have HardiePlank with a cedar-mill or smooth finish, or HardiePanel in Sierra 8 or Stucco texture, the driveway interface is the same. What changes is the trim detail where the paved surface terminates. We stock Hardie-compatible flashing and Z-bar on the truck, plus fiber-cement safe sealants such as OSI Quad Max, which bonds well to both Hardie and concrete or paver edges without the silicone smear you get from cheaper caulks. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: standard pressure-treated lumber used as a driveway edging board will hold moisture against Hardie trim and cause premature swelling or paint failure within two Texas summers. We use composite or aluminum edging instead.

Signs Your James Hardie Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Bottom course of Hardie siding is soft or swollen within 12 inches of the driveway. Water is splashing back onto the siding from a paving surface pitched toward the house, or the paver base has settled and now directs runoff at the wall. Hardie wicks moisture from the cut edge, and once it swells, the paint bond fails.
- White chalky residue on pavers where they touch the siding. Efflorescence from pavers is normal early on, but if it climbs up onto the Hardie, it means splash-back is constant. The fix is adjusting grade or adding a drainage channel, not just scrubbing the wall.
- Pavers have shifted, leaving a gap between the driveway and house foundation. Dallas clay soil expands and contracts aggressively. A shifted paver field lets water run underneath and soak the soil at the foundation line, which is hard on both the slab and any Hardie trim in contact with the ground.
- Caulk line between driveway and Hardie trim is cracked or peeling. That joint moves every time a car drives over the slab edge. A failing seal lets water sit against the cut edge of the siding, which is exactly what voids a Hardie warranty.
- Ants or termites moving between pavers and siding. Paver bases hold just enough organic material to attract insects, and an unsealed gap is an open door. Termites will not eat Hardie, but they will travel through it to get to framing lumber.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, paver driveway installation runs $7,000 – $18,000. A smaller driveway or one using standard concrete pavers lands at the lower end; a larger driveway with permeable pavers, deeper base excavation, or a natural stone product lands at the higher end. Paver patio installation runs $3,500 – $11,000, and driveway replacement, if you have an existing concrete slab that needs to come out first, runs $5,000 – $14,000.
Every price we give is written before any work starts, per the Threshold Standard Mason Remodeling has used on projects across Dallas since 2004. The price includes excavation, base material, pavers, edge restraint, and cleanup. It also includes the critical Hardie-adjacent details: proper grade away from the house, a drainage channel where needed, and a sealed joint at the siding line. You receive the technician’s name and photo before a visit, and the price does not change once the job starts.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the drainage around your Hardie siding yourself. Run a hose at the base of the wall where the driveway meets the house and watch where water pools. If it stands against the siding for more than a few minutes after the water is off, the grade is wrong and needs correction.
What you should not do is cut or relocate Hardie boards near grade, or try to lift and reset sunken pavers against the house without removing the base and restoring proper slope. A paver that sits proud of the siding creates a shelf for water; one that sits low creates a dam. Getting the pitch right means pulling the edge course, re-compacting the base, and reinstalling with the right edge restraint. FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway in Dallas lasts 25 to 40 years, with the main variable being base preparation rather than the pavers themselves. Dallas clay moves, so we over-excavate and install a geotextile fabric under the base to slow that movement. Call (432) 302-8761 for an exact quote on your driveway, and we will show you what the base prep includes.
Yes, most paver driveways can be repaired by lifting the affected section, re-leveling the base, and reinstalling the same pavers, typically saving 40 – 60% versus full replacement. The exception is when the base has failed across the entire field or the pavers themselves are cracked through. We will tell you the honest answer after looking at it.
Most paver driveway installations in Dallas take 3 to 5 working days from excavation to final compaction, with an additional day for sealing if you choose it. Weather affects the schedule; we keep you informed by phone as the job progresses.
We stock and have direct access to specification-grade pavers from Belgard, Unilock, and Techo-Bloc, alongside other brands we work with such as KraftMaid for cabinetry and Cambria and Silestone for surfaces. We handle ordering, delivery, and any product issues, so you never have a pallet of pavers sitting in your driveway with no crew to install them. Call (432) 302-8761 for a free estimate.
