James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Dallas typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the scope of the job and how much of your existing bathroom needs to come out first. We stock and install James Hardie fiber cement backer board and HardieBacker panels for wet-area applications, and we can usually start your project within a week or two of the written estimate. Most Dallas homeowners discover they need this work when tile starts cracking, grout keeps failing, or they pull up a corner of flooring and find the substrate underneath has turned to mush from years of Texas humidity and shower steam.
Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dollar: whether your James Hardie product is actually the problem, what it costs to fix it right, and who’s going to show up at your door. Isaac Pruett walks every Dallas job himself before work starts, because a plan on paper and a bathroom in front of you are two different things.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

Most Dallas bathrooms built or remodeled in the last 15 years use one of two James Hardie products behind the tile: HardieBacker 500 cement board (the half-inch version) for walls and ceilings, or HardieBacker 250 (quarter-inch) for floors and countertops. The 500 series is what you’ll find behind shower surrounds and tub walls. The 250 series goes under bathroom floor tile where height matters.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: HardieBacker 500 has a distinct nailing pattern printed right on the board, and if the original installer ignored it before burying it under tile, the board can flex and eventually fail at the seams. That’s not a James Hardie defect; it’s an installation error we see regularly in Dallas homes built during the 2000s boom. When we open up a failing shower, we can usually tell within five minutes whether the board was installed to spec or rushed.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we use genuine James Hardie panels. Generic cement board from the big-box stores is cheaper per sheet, but the edges crumble differently and the screw-hold rating isn’t the same. In a humid Dallas bathroom, that difference shows up as loose tile within a few years. We’d rather install the real thing and not have the conversation twice.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Tile cracks running in a straight line across multiple tiles. This almost always traces back to a seam in the backer board that wasn’t taped and mudded properly before tile went up. The board flexes, the tile can’t, so it cracks.
- Grout that keeps crumbling or falling out in the same spot. Loose backer board moves just enough to break the grout bond. Re-grouting won’t fix it; it’ll just fall out again in six months.
- A soft or spongy spot in the bathroom floor. This is the big one. HardieBacker 250 over a rotted subfloor will flex, and you’ll feel it underfoot. In Dallas slab homes, this is less common, but pier-and-beam bathrooms in neighborhoods like Lakewood and East Dallas get it regularly.
- Water staining on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom. That means water is getting past the shower pan or through the backer board seams. By the time you see the stain, the board behind the tile is already saturated.
- Mold or mildew smell that won’t go away no matter how much you clean. Cement board doesn’t rot, but it will hold moisture against the studs behind it. The smell tells you the moisture barrier behind the board was skipped or failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Dallas lands between $9,000 and $28,000. A smaller job, like replacing a failing shower surround with new HardieBacker and tile, usually falls in the $4,500 to $12,000 range. A tub-to-shower conversion runs $3,500 to $10,000. What you’re paying for is the tear-out of the failed board, inspection of what’s behind it, new moisture barrier, new HardieBacker installed to spec, and then your tile, fixtures, and trim.
| Scope | Dallas Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Shower surround: remove failed board, new HardieBacker, tile | $4,500 – $12,000 |
| Tub-to-shower conversion with James Hardie substrate | $3,500 – $10,000 |
| Full bathroom remodel, gut to finish | $9,000 – $28,000 |
| Small bathroom or powder room refresh | $5,000 – $12,000 |
The range depends on what we find when we open the wall. Rotted studs, a failed shower pan, or plumbing that’s no longer to code all add cost, and you’ll know about every dollar before we touch anything. Our written price comes before work starts, and it doesn’t change unless you change the scope. Every job is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you.
We’re an independent Dallas contractor; we’re not affiliated with James Hardie. We just install their products because they hold up in this climate better than most everything else we’ve tried.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s where DIY goes wrong with James Hardie bathroom work: cutting cement board produces silica dust, which you do not want in your lungs, and the board itself is heavy and unforgiving. A half-inch HardieBacker sheet is a two-person lift. Score-and-snap works for straight cuts, but cutting around a shower valve or niche opening without a proper blade and mask is a genuinely bad idea.
What you can safely check on your own: look for cracked grout in horizontal lines, press gently on floor tiles to feel for movement, and check the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom for any discoloration. That’ll tell you whether you have a real problem or just an aging bathroom. If any of those signs are present, call us at (432) 302-8761. We’ll come look, give you a written price, and you’ll know exactly who’s coming before we ever pick up a tool.
FAQs

Installed correctly with a proper moisture barrier, James Hardie backer board lasts 30 to 50 years in a Dallas bathroom. What fails first is usually the tile or grout on top of it, not the board itself. If your board is failing before the 15-year mark, the original install was almost certainly the problem. Call (432) 302-8761 and we’ll tell you what we see when we open it up.
Sometimes, but not often. A targeted repair works if the failure is isolated to one seam or one corner and the board behind the rest of the tile is still sound. Once water has traveled behind the board, cutting out a section and patching it rarely holds long-term. We’ll give you the honest answer after we look, and the written estimate covers whichever way you go. Estimates are free.
A shower surround replacement usually takes 5 to 7 working days from tear-out to grout. A full bathroom remodel runs 2 to 4 weeks depending on plumbing changes, fixture lead times, and what we find behind the walls. We’ll give you a schedule with the written price, and we stick to it. You should know who is coming, what it costs, and what happens if something goes wrong before we ever pick up a tool.
We stock HardieBacker 500 and 250 on our trucks and keep additional sheets in our Dallas yard, so there’s no ordering delay for standard bathroom jobs. We also stock products from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the finish side of the project. You won’t need to chase down materials yourself. Call (432) 302-8761 and we’ll schedule the free estimate.
