Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
A full Schluter-system bathroom remodel in Dallas typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on shower size, tile selection, and whether we’re repairing failed waterproofing or building from studs. Most homeowners call us after noticing cracked grout at the shower floor perimeter, a lingering musty smell, or tile that’s started to flex. When a Schluter membrane or drain assembly fails, the fix usually isn’t a patch job, it’s opening the pan and doing it right.
We stock Schluter KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, drain assemblies, and profiles on our trucks, so the most common failures get addressed in a single visit. If you’re dealing with water damage behind tile or a shower that leaks into the room below, this is the page that explains what you’re actually looking at, what it costs, and how we handle it in Dallas.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Most Dallas bathrooms we open up have Schluter’s KERDI waterproofing membrane or the KERDI-BOARD backer system behind the tile, paired with a KERDI-DRAIN or linear drain. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: Schluter drain grates and bonding flanges are matched sets. You can’t drop a new grate onto an old flange and expect it to seal, even if both say “Schluter” on the box. The flange dimensions changed between earlier KERDI-DRAIN generations and the current lineup, and a mismatch means the waterproofing seam at the drain is compromised.
Inside the shower, KERDI-BOARD panels come in thicknesses from 5 mm to 2 inches, and the panel thickness dictates which screws and washers we use, along with how the corners get reinforced. When tile has been removed and the board is saturated or crumbling, we don’t patch it. We cut back to dry framing, replace the panel runs, and re-tape every seam with KERDI-BAND. That’s the only way to keep Schluter’s own warranty intact on the repair.
We use OEM Schluter components on every waterproofing repair. Aftermarket KERDI knockoffs exist, and they’re cheaper, but the fleece backing that bonds to thin-set is the entire waterproofing mechanism. We won’t install a membrane we can’t stand behind, and that means genuine Schluter, every time.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking at the shower floor-to-wall transition. This is the most common first sign. The shower pan flexes slightly with use, and when the waterproofing underneath has separated from the drain or the wall junction, the grout line cracks open and starts letting water through.
- A musty smell that comes back a day after cleaning. Water is sitting somewhere it shouldn’t be: behind the tile, under the pan, or inside a wall cavity. By the time you can smell it, the waterproofing layer has been breached long enough for moisture to soak into framing.
- Tile that moves when you press on it. Tiles should never flex. Movement means the thin-set has lost bond, usually because water got behind the tile and broke down the mortar from behind.
- Water stains on the ceiling below the shower. This is the one nobody wants to find. It means the pan or the drain connection has failed completely, and water is traveling through the subfloor into the room below.
- Discolored or soft drywall at the shower’s exterior edge. Water wicks outward from the shower curb or the wall junction, saturating the drywall just outside the wet area. You’ll see paint bubbling, peeling, or a soft spot when you lean a knee against it.
Any one of these is worth a look. Put two together and you’re almost certainly opening the pan. The sooner we address it, the less framing we’re replacing, and framing replacement is where Dallas bathroom remodel costs climb fast.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how Schluter bathroom remodeling pricing breaks down in Dallas, based on what we see across the metro:
- Full Schluter shower rebuild (pan, drain, KERDI membrane, tile): $9,000 – $18,000
- Schluter tub-to-shower conversion with new KERDI waterproofing: $6,500 – $12,000
- Schluter drain assembly replacement with pan rework: $2,500 – $5,000
- KERDI-BOARD wall repair with re-tile (partial shower): $3,000 – $7,000
- Complete Schluter bathroom remodel (shower, floor, vanity, fixtures): $12,000 – $28,000
The range depends on tile choice more than anything else. Porcelain subway tile costs a fraction of large-format marble, and the labor difference is just as wide. Every quote from Mason Remodeling includes the written price before we start, with parts and labor separated so you know exactly what you’re paying for. No change orders, no surprise invoices at the end. Isaac Pruett walks every Dallas job himself before the first nail goes in, and he’ll tell you straight what’s behind the tile before we quote it.
All Schluter repair and remodel work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost. That’s written into the guarantee, not something we mention when you ask.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do one thing yourself: check your shower for flexing tile, cracked grout, and the signs above. That tells you whether you have a problem and how urgent it is. What you should not do is cut into a Schluter membrane and try to patch it. Waterproofing is a system. The membrane, the banding, the corners, the drain flange, they all work as one continuous envelope. A homeowner patch with a tube of sealant or a scrap of membrane from the hardware store creates a false repair that holds for a few months and fails worse than the original problem.
The danger isn’t electrical or structural, it’s water. A shower pan that leaks slowly rots the subfloor and the joists underneath it, and by the time you see the ceiling stain downstairs, you’re paying for framing repair on top of the shower. That’s the expensive version of this repair, and we’d rather catch it before it gets there. Call (432) 302-8761 and we’ll take a look. The estimate is free, and you’ll know what you’re dealing with whether you hire us or not.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter KERDI system lasts 25 to 40 years in Dallas, with the real variable being how well the waterproofing was installed and whether the house has proper ventilation. Dallas humidity and the hard water we get from city supply both stress grout and sealants faster than drier climates, which is why we re-seal and check waterproofing seams on every bathroom we touch. Call (432) 302-8761 if you’re not sure of your shower’s age or condition.
Rarely. If the failure is isolated to one seam or corner and caught very early, we can sometimes open that section, re-band it, and re-tile a small area. But by the time homeowners notice the signs, the failure has usually spread past the visible damage, and a pan rebuild is the honest fix. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before we quote anything.
Two to five working days is typical, depending on whether we’re replacing just the pan and drain assembly or rebuilding the entire shower. The waterproofing itself cures fast, but thin-set and grout need proper cure time between steps, and nobody should rush that on a wet area. We’ll give you a day-by-day schedule with your written estimate.
We stock Schluter KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, KERDI-BOARD, drain assemblies, and the most common profile sizes on our trucks and in our Dallas shop. If your project needs a specialty profile or a drain grate in an uncommon finish, we order it from our Schluter supply chain and it’s typically on site within a few days. KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone parts for the rest of the bathroom are available through the same process.
